Doesn't seem right to feed cows refined sugar and chocolate. But then without MBM additives we wouldn't have had BSE, so Mr. Science says, "Go for it!!!"
No wonder you have to pasteurize your cow's milk. You have no place calling yourself a nutritionist or any place being quoted on the safety of raw milk, when this is what you feed your cattle. Healthy and SAFE raw milk comes from cows who are fed and cared for the way nature intended. If you were actually a nutritionist you would know the garbage on that sheet pan are exactly what create an ideal environment for viruses and disease to flourish, no matter the species. I 'd be afraid to drink raw milk from a cow who ate this crap!
I think there is something wrong with the name of your website. It should be Dairy and Health on the Farm: What not to do. If you are going to put pictures up of donuts and cookies that you are about to feed your cows, then that would be a much better title.
This has to be a joke and not true...cows being fed donuts and cookies and laying on manure and sawdust in the barn. If this is the type of expert opinion that Gov. Doyle based his raw milk veto on, heaven help us all!!! Milk at Foremost must be really yucky.
A fun treat for the cows... What in the world are you doing with that much baked goods in your house? Now you're going to feed that garbage to your cows?!! Thank god I live in California and get REAL milk.
Okay, this really takes the cake...:) If I ate like that I would have mastitis instantly. You could cut down on your vet bills and antibiotic costs if you would stop feeding this stuff to your cows...
How can you have a passion for nutrition??? There is NO WAY you can give a flip about nutrition when you give your cows this junk food which I don't even give my own kids!!
Disgusting! This is what you feed your cows? Really?! It's not a joke? I will never drink pasteurized, mass produced milk again! You make me so glad I found a reputable farm nearby that pastures their cows, knows what REAL nutrition is all about and never feeds their cows anything but grass.
My opinion- you have absolutely NO common sense!!! WHY would you feed your cows cookies and crap?? Even a first grader knows what is healthy for a cow! Is there something you miraculously figured out, that the rest of the world hasn't? How can you call yourself a nutritionist? And the child holding the tray happens to look as miserable as those cows are going to be after eating that! No wonder!!!! I think someone from 60 minutes, or some news channel needs to pick this story up, and let the world see what you are doing on your farm.
If your sterilization habits are anything like your feeding habits, it's no wonder your son got so sick. You have no one but yourself to blame for that. How dare you compare yourself and your experience to the 100's of reputable, responsible dairy farmers out there. What right do you have to interfere with my right to eat and drink what I choose... See More. Your combination of ignorance and arrogance is nothing short of disgusting to me. You not only put the health of your cows at risk, but that of your own child. You don't even have enough sense to take responsibliity for your own actions.
I'm curious what your credentials are that make you a "nutritionist". You know, that quote you gave about the WI raw milk bill ~ you mentioned you were a nutritionist. Just wondering where you got your certification. Because any nutritionist that allows THAT in her home on a regular basis and feeds THAT to her cows....well, its no wonder your kids got sick.
I won't even feed my kids M & M's . I am, in fact, a nutritionist of sorts and would like to clue you in on a scientific fact. Cattle are designed by evolution to eat grass. When fed other foodstuffs (if you can even call an M&M that) the bacteria in their digestive system mutates and creates stronger and more resistant bacteria that is more dangerous to humans. I would NEVER buy milk that came from your farm unless it was processed to the point that every living thing in it was dead. Who am I kidding? I would never buy milk from your farm.
This must be somekind of joke. Feeding dairy cows this crap. Monsanto jacket. You calling yourself a nutritionist. If this is true - No wonder your son got sick! This is insane! It's people like you that make it difficult for people with common sense and intellegence to obtain wholesome Raw (Fresh) Milk from certified clean sources. This will NOT be tolerated for one second longer! I've devoted 1/5 of my income/time to do whatever it takes to stop this insanity. The few noisy morons who screw themselves up will not prevent me or others like me from access to fresh raw milk from WAPF/ certified sources. This is another case of trying to fix a problem that only exists because people like you don't have a clue and a short sighted government that's lost touch with reality. Throughout history nature has always won. Human intervention is only temporary. Working against nature is only done for short term gain without considering the long term misery. Something YOU have encountered first hand. Listen and learn...if that's even possible.
I am disappointed that people make a loud example of the wrong aspects of our local dairy industry. We should be promoting and celebrating all the wonderful local farmers who work diligently every day to provide us (and their cattle) with the healthiest products available. And to all those anti-Wisconsin milk comments, don't hold this against us.
In March you wrote: "Every day Wisconsin dairy farmer, David Kyle, believes in both right and responsibility to create and provide his girls with a balanced, nutritious diet that will provide the world with a healthy, wholesome product."
Dairy cow nutrition is the same as people nutrition. People could not live on one ingredient alone. In order for a person to function properly there has to be a balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates and fats, water and vitamins and minerals. Dairy cows are the same as they need all of the same ingredients. Yes, donuts are part of the carbohyrates mix as cows can metabolize this product and use it for the needed energy to make wholesome milk. Bakery is part of the simple sugars that can be turned into energy when mixed with the other needed ingredients. Yes, it is true, everything in moderation, even for the cow! Man can not surive on grass alone!
I am laughing SO hard that you actually believe dairy cow nutrition is the same as human nutrition. Seriously?! You genuinely believe that, I'm convinced... but how flawed is that? Have you ever picked up a book and read about nutrition for cows? I doubt it. You've been fed Monsanto propaganda and falsely believe what you've been told. I encourage you to do your own research before you latch onto the claims of the USDA, Monsanto and the likes of Big Ag.
Man can not survive on grass alone... this is true. Our digestive systems are not capable of adequately breaking down grass for proper assimilation. A cow, however, is a ruminant. Their digestive systems DO properly digest grass and they should not be fed grains and carbohydrates. They do not have the same nutritional needs as humans. I am laughing ALL over again.
Do your homework. I think you're in for a BIG surprise.
We all want to consume products that provide excellent nutrition, are safe, and won't cause us to get sick.
In my lifetime I have consumed a large volume of raw milk and I like raw milk. HOWEVER, milk is an excellent media to grow bacteria both harmless ones and pathogenic ones. Pasteurizing milk reduces the risk of getting sick. Anyone who drinks milk is increasing their risk of food-borne disease.
This was the reason Governor Doyle vetoed the raw milk bill.
Would some please explain to me how the Kyle's feeding bread, donuts, and pastries to their cows would increase the likelihood of their cows passing pathogens on in their milk? These are products that are safe for human consumption but were pulled from the shelf because they were close to their "use by date."
I know the Kyle's farm well. If I were to drink raw milk, I would have no issue with drinking milk produced on their farm.
Laurie's blog offers a great deal of helpful information to consumers that are not familiar with dairy farming. Laurie's opinions are based on sound science. I know of few people that care more for the safety and well being of their family than Laurie. The criticism of her and her family is unmerited.
It's not rocket science. It's about nature in balance. And refined sugar and white flour are not part of natures balance. Have you ever hear of beneficial bacteria?
Mark McAfee explains it well: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/05/01/mark-mcafee-interview.aspx
I've found nothing here based on sound science, biology, nutrition or otherwise. Please point these scientific facts out. All I see is a bunch of Big Agra propaganda and a reference to the foodpyramid.gov.
Comparing cows nutritional needs to humans is ridiculous, yet any animal will have an unhealthy digestive system and lowered immunity eating refined sugar and flour.
Oh. My. Gravy!! Did you really just say that a cow's nutrition requirment is the same as a human's?!?!? Good Grief!! Those poor poor poor wild steers!! How will they get their donuts that they so desperately need to survive? I haven't seen a donut tree in YEARS!! Hhmm, I guess they'll just have to eat grass and hope for the best!!! Bahahahahahahah!!!!!!
When cows are fed high sugars and starch, the bacteria in the stomach has to change in order to process this as cows are not made to eat this type of sugar or starch. When the bacteria changes it causes isues with the good bactetria throughout the body. In turn causing issues with the milk, as the milk also holds alot of the natural and good bacteria from the cow. When it is changed due to un natural diet it has a higher risk of turning to bad bacteria causing helth issues for the cow and for humans consuming the milk..
I think these people are just slimy, corrupt, worthless puppets bought out by Monsanto to pull the strings of the similar governor. No one can seriously make these claims unless they are making a bunch of money to do just that.
"Dairy cow nutrition is the same as people nutrition." Um, I am greatly outraged by your ignorance. The mere fact alone that we are a completely different species and that cows are RUMINANTS? THAT COWS ARE MEANT TO EAT GRASS ALONE? Are cows now supposed to grow canines and eat meat and become omnivores like we are?
So let's follow your "logic" and suppose that cows really are supposed to eat like we humans: Has it occured to you that humans aren't really supposed to be eating refined sugar and flour products? Or especially shortening and high fructose corn syrup which is probably in those bakery goods you so *lovingly* give to your cows? That these foods cause massive amounts of health problems? Get a freakin' clue, and a REAL food education.
Dairy and health is the wrong name for this blog. Good grief, are people THAT stupid? Cows eat GRASS and belong OUTSIDE in the sunshine!! Of course your son got sick on their raw milk! Anyone would! I find it interesting that the child featured is wearing a jacket that says 'Monsanto'. That sums it all up. Disgusting.
yall--this is a total stunt: http://www.nutritiouswisconsinmilk.com/2010/05/mackenzie-is-on-mound-again-goodness.html#comments
No one quotes the gov food pyramid with pride and this blogger knows it. No one feeds manure-laden cows donuts while wearing a Monsanto fleece...unless they are trying to get attn.
Regardless, please please keep pasteurizing the milk from this farm--in it's raw form, I'm sure it'd kill ya. I'll get my real milk elsewhere. From pastured, grass-fed cows...you know, the kind that don't sit in their own crap.
Wow, I truly can't believe this! Cows "need" grains?! People don't need grains! I sure wouldn't feed my kids that crap! My 4 and 6 yr olds know what cows eat. I get my milk raw and from a grass farmer!
I'm having a REALLY hard time taking this blog/post seriously. Is this a prank or something? If not, I'm just....rendered speechless. WOW.
Well, whether it is or isn't a prank, I'm SO grateful I have farmers near me who pasture they cows from start to finish and I get amazing meat and milk. Lord have MERCY on the people who drink milk from this farm.
C'mon. Someone's april fooling on this one...right?
All i can say is, WOW are you that stupid?? I have never had anything to do with cows and even i know that they only should eat grass. Blame yourself for your child getting sick, if that is what you feed your cows of course any raw milk from them is going to be insanly bad for anyone. Disgusting!!!
Wow -- this is really disgusting. And the poor girl delivering the milk looks rather uhealthy herself.
Raw milk from cows grazing on pasture is one of the most healing foods on the this planet. It has cured me from blood sugar problems and has been the only thing that has cleared my eczema and post nasel drip. Both my daughter (age 3 yrs) and my immune system have strengthened tremendously since drinking raw milk from pastured cows. She never even gets a light cold anymore (and neither do I). My PMS symptoms have also cleared (cold sores, blemishes, moodiness)! My skin also looks amazing, better than it did when I was getting facials and spending money on expensive skin care products. And of course my daughter’s skin just glows and she is always happy and singing. We have only been drinking raw milk for one year and I am amazed at the healing power of this food.
Raw milk from small farmed PASTURED cows is everyone’s human right.
I'm stunned. I've have combed through this blog looking for the post that explains it all away as satire. The owner is such a horrific stereotype that it just can't be real. It can't! What kind of a moron feeds cows the crap in that picture?!

This just goes to show that (unfortunately), even small-time local farmers can't always be trusted to let nature do it's thing.
I am studying nutrition right now, and I've not come across anything that says donuts and cookies are part of a healthy diet. Sure, if you eat healthy you can enjoy a donut or a cookie now and again, but refined carbohydrates are not required or even preferred nutrition. Cows don't choose to eat crap, they didn't wake up this morning thinking "hey, I really need a donut". you are choosing to feed them this way. Basing that on principles of nutrition is BS (apparently what they are lying in anyway, so it's all good in your book).
I would like to suggest you read Nancy Appleton's "Lick the Sugar Habit" Then you will probably take this post down out of embarassment. Sugar for cows... You've got to be kidding.
I am gobsmacked. I seriously thought it was a joke. But when I read your own reply - "Dairy cow nutrition is the same as people nutrition" I was simply shocked.
