Keeping the cows cool and comfortable

The girls enjoyed their cool, comfortable dairy barn with the "Big Ass Fans" running at 1 million CFM (cubic feet per minute).  The fans have been a great investment for the girls as the summer temperatures go up.

Learning and educating yourself keeps the mind and body healthy

Please take the time to do your own reading and educate yourself about the health benefits of dairy in your diet. The only product that contains nine essential vitamins and minerals is calcium and there is only one way to get that.  Milk is important in providing good bone health and strength.  It is very important for young people to take in the correct amount of calcium each day.

A healthy tip that provides good health and savings is to brown bag your food when headed out for a sports event.  It is much healthier to include an apple, peanut butter sandwich, raisins, carrots and a water for after the event, then to stop at a fast-food restaurant.  There are many recipes for trail mix and home-made granola that provide good eating.

Educate yourself about the health hazards that come along with drinking raw milk

MADISON, Wis.—

Wisconsin health officials apparently have found the source of bacteria that sickened 16 people attending a school event early this month in Raymond.

Lab tests show the bacteria that caused the diarrheal illness in people who drank raw milk at the event, matches the strain found in unpasteurized milk produced at a local farm.

Officials say a parent had supplied unpasteurized milk from the farm for the school event.

Testing shows that the bacteria strain from stool samples submitted by ill students and adults matched the strain from milk samples taken from a bulk tank at the farm.

The farm did not sell the unpasteurized milk, and no laws were broken. The farm is licensed and in good standing with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

Raw milk is illegal for a reason.  It definitely needs to go through pasteurization and homogenization.

A really good friend of mine passed this on to me the day she retired from education after 32 years in the classroom.  I wanted to share it with all of my readers.

A tribute to a great farmer!

We lost a very special person this weekend to a disease that took all of the energy out of his weary body.  Yes, he was a farmer until the end.  Bill Papenfus was a man with a great heart and warm smile.  Bill worked his land and did it with his equipment that he had nurtured all of these years.  It wasn't the best and the brightest, but it was something Bill was comfortable with.  Bill's land sits facing Lake Geneva and there is a most amazing view.  Every time Dave works the land you take in the view.  God rest Bill's soul.
