Calving is an exciting time on a dairy farm!

During calving, a close eye is kept on both cow and calf to ensure the health of both animals.  Dairy farmers, their employees or their veterinarians are available to help.

Cows that moo...ve is a realistic way of keeping the herd fresh!

Culling cows - or removing some cows from the dairy herd - is a common practice that allows a dairy farm to bring new, more productive cows into the herd, thus ensuring a steady supply of milk.

No two spots are the same!

Each Holstein cow has unique black and white spots - no two are the same!  At Kylecrest Holsteins LLC our girls are very much individuals and each are creatures of habits, but their styles are very much different.  Each cow has a unique way of walking, eating and walks into our parlor in the same order each day.  It is amazing how these girls are certainly creatures of habit.

How many dairy farms are there in the U.S.?

There are nearly 60,000 dairy farms in the U.S. today that produce nutritious dairy foods that help feed the world.  Considering how many people there are in this country, the dairy producers that are feeding us have a lot of responsibility and they take their job very seriously.  It is very important to provide healthy, foods to all Americans.

Helping cows to feel better when they are under the weather.

Sometimes it's necessary for farmers to treat cows with antibiotics when they are ill, just as humans sometimes need  medication when they are sick.

A cow being treated for illness is separated from the milking herd to ensure its milk does not go into the milk supply.

Milk companies respond to consumer choices!

Milk companies have responded to consumer requests for choices in the dairy aisle, and many now offer milk from cows not supplemented with rbST.  This decision is due to market demand and is not related to any health or safety issue.  ALL MILK IS WHOLESOME, SAFE AND NUTRITIOUS!

Food safety is always an important part of a dairy farmers day.

Dairy farmers work diligently to implement a wide range of measures to secure facilities and the milk supply.  Measures in place on my farm include: anyone entering the property must follow the biosecurity signs when entering the property.  We maintain a closed her at Kylecrest Holsteins LLC and we only breed and raise our own cattle.  We do not buy cattle from other herds.  We have many extra cattle that we are selling and they are all vaccinated and tested before we sell any animals to different people.  We recently sold a September calf and it is going to find a home in the state of South Dakota.  We hope the young man that is getting this show calf for a Christmas present enjoys his great gift.

Comfortable, safe and clean conditions!

Dairy farmers provide comfortable, safe and clean conditions for both cow and calf during the birthing process and afterward.  Just prior to giving birth, the pregnant cow is housed in a special pen, where she is given individual care and attention.

Farmers bottle-feed calves individually to assure they receive good nutrition.

Tis the season to eat right, get the right amount of sleep and drink lots of water!

It is very important to drink lots of water, eat right and get plenty of rest especially during the holidays.  It seems that all families are running around like crazy and trying to get all of their errands completed before the holidays.  My family is so busy that it is hard to get time together and enjoy meals and to have time to really chat about what is going on with each of us.  Last night we finally took time to chat and reground ourselves.  It was great to see the kids talking with one another and sharing information.  I am thankful this holiday season that my kids really get along and trust one another.

Providing a good environment for the animals makes for healthy cows!

Dairy farmers depend on healthy cows for their livelihoods.  They care for their herds by providing a nutritious diet, good medical care and healthy living conditions.

Milk and dairy foods undergo extensive testing before they reach the grocery store.

Food safety is one of the most important issues involved in producing healthy, nutritious products for consumers.  I am a mom of two high school kids and feel confident feeding my children healthy, nutritious milk and dairy products.  Eating dairy products each day is important in keeping my children healthy and happy and ready to perform in their athletic challenges.

Living and loving the land!

As dairy farmers, who live on or near the land that our families farm, we understand the importance of protecting our natural resources.  We depend on this land for our business and our quality of life.

Economic Sense!

Dairy farmers support practices that make economic sense, help the environment and are socially responsible to our communities and our world - e.g., reducing energy use, reducing cooling and packaging costs and recycling manure into renewable energy. At Kylecrest Holsteins LLC we have a compost barn where we produce compost as an end product that gardeners and landscapers incorporate into their projects.  It is cow manure and sawdust tilled every day 3X a day for 6 months.  The product is then removed from our barn and put into windrows and then tilled again for a period of time before it is sold to customers.  It is a great product to combine with your soil and grow beautiful flowers and vegetables.

During your workout!

Slowly increase intensity!

One of the most common culprits behind muscle soreness is stepping up your program too quickly.  Taking a more gradual approach will only protect against soreness, it will help you progress more smoothly. Lifting too much too soon can lead to overtraining, which occurs when your muscles don't have adequate time to recover between workouts.
